Bradley Nowell, front man for the 90′s ska punk band Sublime, would’ve turned 44 today.
Sublime was a California band consisting of Nowell on vocals and guitar, Eric Wilson on bass guitar, and Brad Gaugh on drums. Their shows and albums included a variety of music ranging from ska to punk to reggae and sometimes even hip hop. Their original songs often blended elements from these and other genres to give Sublime a unique sound.
The band released two albums on their own label, Skunk Records. The first album, 40 Oz to Freedom, was released in 1992 and got the band some radio play around California. Their second album, Robbin’ the Hood was released in 1994. The band continued to gain popularity and headlined several tours including the first Warped Tour. The band signed to MCA records and recorded a third album. On May 25th, 1996, Nowell died of a heroin overdose at the age of 28. The album, titled Sublime, was released two months later. The two remaining band members decided not to continue the group without Nowell.
Although the band had a relatively short career and didn’t achieve mainstream success while active, Sublime’s music has become massively popular and recognizable. Their music continues to be played and has created a legacy that continues to this day.
